What is a Root Canal?

Patients generally need a root canal when there is inflammation or infection in the roots of a tooth. During root canal treatment, the pulp, which is the hollow section of a tooth that contains the nerve tissue, blood vessels, and other cells, is removed. The area is then disinfected and the canals are shaped before a filling is placed to seal the space. After root canal therapy, the tooth is “dead”. The patient will no longer feel any pain in that tooth because the nerve tissue has been removed, and the infection has been eliminated.

Once the root canal is complete, the tooth is fragile and will need a crown to protect it. Over time, the tooth will become more brittle so this added protection will ensure that the patient can use the tooth as they were able to before.

Most times, root canal treatment can be completed in one appointment, unless there is multiple canals or a larger infection which would require a second visit to complete the procedure.
