We create smiles for all ages, including the smallest of smiles at our pediatric dentist offices in Harleysville and Souderton. Children sometimes require different dental procedures, and we can treat your whole family at one office (Harleysville or Souderton), which adds up to extra convenience.
Our dentists can care for your child as they grow from a baby to a young adult.
When should I first bring my child to the dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends a child’s first visit when the first tooth erupts as a well-baby check. This is a good opportunity for parents to ask questions and seek advice.
Around the age of two, a child’s visit will give them the opportunity to “get a ride in the chair and count the teeth,” and occasionally polish, if the visit is going well.
When will my child lose their first tooth?
Most children will begin losing their front teeth around ages six or seven, while the back teeth can be in the mouth until the child reaches 13 years or older.
If my child gets a cavity on a baby tooth, does it need to be fixed?
Many people believe that primary teeth (baby teeth) are not as important as permanent teeth. However, neglected cavities on the baby teeth can frequently lead to further problems in the development of permanent teeth. Baby teeth are important for chewing and providing space for permanent teeth to get into the proper position.
Should my child get a fluoride treatment?
When you visit one of our offices in Harleysville or Souderton, our pediatric dental specialists will recommend fluoride in-office to protect current teeth in the mouth and fluoride supplements to strengthen developing teeth currently growing in the jawbone. Parents can discuss this with our dental staff to make the best decisions for their child.
What are sealants?
Sealants are another preventative measure for your child. Sealants fill in the deep grooves of first adult molars, which usually erupt around age six. The process is easy for the patient and is very effective as a preventative measure against decay. While sealants are not a substitute for brushing and flossing, they can keep cavities from forming and may even stop early stages of decay.
Why does my child need x-rays?
Radiographs (x-rays) help to diagnose certain dental conditions which could otherwise be missed. X-rays detect much more than cavities. With the proper imaging, dentists can survey erupting teeth, diagnose bone diseases or plan for future orthodontic treatment.
How do I know if my child needs braces?
Children should have a pre-orthodontic screening by the age of seven. At this young age they may benefit from a small retainer-like device that helps the jaw grow a little more quickly to make room for adult teeth, to keep them from crowding. Children with a thumb-sucking habit after the age of six can also be helped by ortho-appliances.
At what age do you recommend traditional braces?
Panorex screenings are also recommended around age 12 to evaluate for traditional orthodontics. We provide traditional “braces” at both our Harleysville and Souderton locations.
Why does my child have "shark teeth"?
Parents may notice that their children have two rows of teeth as their permanent teeth are coming in to the mouth.
Children may have double rows of teeth for various reasons. The permanent teeth are coming in front or behind the baby teeth which have not yet fallen out. Because of crowding, the adult teeth end up coming in behind the baby teeth. If your child has 2 rows of teeth this may be normal, or it may need to be addressed by one of our pediatric dentists.
