Keeping teeth healthy during the holidays.

5 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR TEETH HEALTHY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

The holidays are here, and with that comes office parties, family gatherings, holiday dinners, and many other festivities to fill up our calendar. At Weaver, Reckner, and Reinhart Dental Associates, we are here to keep you on track of your oral health during one of the busiest times of the year. Here are a few ways to protect and care for your teeth throughout the year.

LIMIT DRINKS AND SNACKS HIGH IN SUGAR

This can be a tough rule to follow, especially this time of year. However, by watching your intake of sugar, it can go a long way to a healthy mouth. Hard and sticky candies can be especially harmful as the sugar tends to stick to your teeth leading to a buildup of harmful bacteria. Sodas, fruit juices, and sports drinks are another source of sugar overload, and you will want to make sure that you avoid these drinks as much as possible. Likewise, dark-colored drinks can cause unwanted stains on the teeth. If you find yourself indulging in any of these substances, be sure to rinse your mouth well with water immediately afterward.

YOUR TEETH ARE NOT A TOOL

Think twice before using your teeth to open that pesky package. Doing so puts you at risk for wearing down enamel or, even worse, breaking a tooth! Patients in orthodontics have to be especially cautious and avoid using the teeth in this manner. At Weaver, Reckner, and Reinhart Dental Associates, we provide all of our orthodontic patients in Montgomery County, PA, with a helpful guide on the do’s and don’ts while wearing braces.

CHOOSE HEALTHY FOOD OPTIONS

There’s no shortage of delicious desserts or snacks during the holidays. While candy canes, cookies, and baked goods are hard to avoid, be on the lookout for fruits and veggies instead. Celery and carrots, broccoli, and other green leafy vegetables provide an excellent source of vitamins and minerals that aid in strengthening tooth enamel. Dairy products are high in calcium which protects tooth enamel.

STAY ON TOP OF YOUR DENTAL ROUTINE AT HOME

With all of the new additions to our calendars over the holidays, it’s easy to forget about our oral hygiene or take shortcuts in our daily routine. Brushing at least twice a day along with flossing are key components to maintaining a healthy mouth. Removing the plaque and buildup on the teeth at home will help to keep the bacteria at bay until your next dental visit.

KEEP YOUR DENTAL APPOINTMENT

Despite the hustle and bustle of the season, don’t forget to keep Weaver, Reckner, and Reinhart Dental Associates on your calendar. Schedule an appointment with our office at least twice a year for routine cleanings and an exam. Our team of hygienists and dentists in Harleysville and Souderton are here to keep your oral health a priority.

At Weaver, Reckner, and Reinhart Dental Associates, we pride ourselves on our commitment to giving our patients a healthy smile.
