DENTAL HEALTH RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR

Everyone knows that with a “new year” comes a set of resolutions or promises to one’s self for the coming year. Many times the resolutions focus on the improvement of your health and well-being going into a new year. By choosing to incorporate dental health into your overall wellness goals, you are one step closer to a healthier you!

The New Year is the perfect time to reevaluate your commitment to your oral health. Studies have shown that proper dental hygiene directly impacts your physical health. For example, according to the American Dental Association, gum disease increases the risk of heart disease.

There are a few simple choices that you can make to start you on the right path toward a healthier mouth.

  • Brush and floss twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste. Flossing is key to eliminating any bacteria or buildup between the teeth where a toothbrush can not reach.
  • Make healthy diet choices. Avoid sugary snacks and drinks as they can cause erosion of the tooth’s enamel, making cavities more likely to form.
  • Abstain from the use of tobacco products. Not only is smoking dangerous for your overall health, but it also stains your teeth and can contribute to serious dental problems.
  • Visit your dental care provider at least twice a year. Staying on top of your oral cancer screenings and checkups are critical steps in your hygiene routine.
